Seitokai no Ichizon – worth it?

That’s some controversial title for the first Anime topic, nevertheless I just can’t stay quiet about this one.

Plot quote: “The members of the student council of Hekiyou Gakuen are chosen by a popularity vote. As a result, all the members are cute girls except for Sugizaki Ken, who studied hard to enter the council. The story features the endless chattering of the members with full of parodies of “The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya”, “Dragon Ball” etc.”
Episodes : 13
Genres : School, Parody, Ecchi, Harem.

It might seem to be an awesome parody at first – I mean, in the first episode we're getting spammed with awesome anime references: Like when they talk about 'what should they do' someone goes 'Let's gather 7 balls to fulfill our wishes!' or the small club president goes 'USO DA!’ with scary and known face (Higurashi no Naku Koro ni), also Lucky Star’s episode ‘welcome’. Other than that, bunch of Haruhi Suzumiya references which I can’t be arsed to mention, as I honestly dislike that serie. In one of further episodes there’s even something fresh – splendid K-On! reference, but does all that make this anime any good?

So at first it makes you feel nostalgic (If you’ve seen the most famous anime that is) and can make you laugh at all these parodies and main hero going ‘I will make this council into my HAREM!‘. Soon though, this ‘joke’ or more like ‘goal’ of making it a harem like in a popular Japanese Hentai Game(where you have to go through trouble of seducing school girls in order to make them fall in love with you and then… Yeah, that’s kind of perverted game we would never touch. Right?), goes terribly wrong. Well, idea seems different from all these boring anime plots where Main Hero isn’t sure about his feelings and is unsure that he loves someone unless all watching it people get to the point that he wants to go to a bed with some girl. So the plot has a small plus here for good idea, but what’s the result? That’s the problem. It became poor way to make current atmosphere change from ‘LOL ITS FUNNY!‘ to ‘Ugghh..I can’t breathe‘ heavy, serious shitness. How can someone’s goal of making 4 girls harem cause something like this? It’s simple, ‘I have to do anything that’s needed to keep Council up and running so that someday it can become my harem’ – and therefore main hero accepts all kind of work, does self-sacrifice so that girls get impressed by his hardwork. Way to ruin the funny anime with bunch of wisely-picked references.

What about characters? Mentioned before Sugisaki Ken, the only guy there, indeed starts many funny parts, but he’s not the character that makes you laugh, he just brings a lot of things you’ve seen in other anime till now, like for instance Ken’s imagining girls in swimsuits or in his Hentai game, which results in girls going rampage. Sakurano Kurimu (even this name sounds awfully pink and fluffy), is the childish one with pink hair. She’s small, does all these cute smiles and sparkles, but it’s not as cool and cute(Or more like – not at all) as for example Konata in Lucky Star, instead it’s annoying and boring. Yet characters making fun of her can make it atleast a bit laughable. Next is Shiina Minatsu, typical energetic and ‘sports type’, she’s just boring, seen in every second school anime (or even more), not bringing anything interesting or new. Her sister, Shiina Mafuyu, is also known kind of girl, quiet, shy, BUT actually she’s a video games geek, which is something special for this kind of personality. It’s nowhere as satisfying as Konata’s otaku mode, so It’s basically unnoticeable feature of hers. Is she making you laugh? Heck no, you’d rather forget she exists. Finally, the savior of Student Council, Akaba Chizuru. She’s the scary type, has long dark hair and manipulative skills. Usually when she’s doing something evil, there’s that funny theme in the background, and usually results in some funny situations. She’s indeed interesting and different character, but she’s also lesbian interested in GODDAMN DIE ALREADY STUDENT COUNCIL PRESIDENT – KURIMU. Still, Chizuru manipulating Kurimu to do what she wants can be quite funny.

Lineart is awesome, animation too, only Op and Ed are damn typical, boring and asking to skip.

As parodies disappear with every next episode and are getting replaced with srs plot, the anime falls down in my eyes. Everything about it has pluses and minuses, both characters and plot, but also music and animation. Therefore it’s quite average, too bad, it had great potential which started dying when you noticed that creators try to make it a famous kind of anime serie you see every month.
