The plot quote: “During the late 1930s in Chicago, the transcontinental train, Flying Pussyfoot, is starting its legendary journey that will leave a trail of blood all over the country. At the same time in New York, the ambitious scientist Szilard and his unwilling aide Ennis, are looking for missing bottles of the immortality elixir. In addition, a war between the mafia groups is getting worse. On board the Advena Avis, in 1711, alchemists are about to learn the price of immortality.”
Okay now that’s some interesting serie that I wanted to see, after all these fail, typical on-going series that are out there(Mostly Kampfer, Nyan koi, Seitokai no Ichizon and other harems like Princess Lover before that). I must say, that anime was the best way to shake off this feeling of disappointment and surely broke the circle of repetitions.
Why? The reason is simple – that’s one of the most orginal series I’ve seen. It’s amazing how well can fantasy genre fit with historical events, in this case it’s connection between mafia conflicts and story about alchemy, immortality.
In the first episode events are messy, they are told by either Vice President(…Of a newspaper called Daily Days) or Carol(The girl trying to pick main-hero for the story and decide events). That aspect was really good, even though the actual scenes were all-way from the end of the serie(later to be continued) and from the middle. It was awesome to watch after completing anime, as everything made perfect sense back then, but for a first episode it might look a bit unconvincigly, yet after the first one everything gets just better and clear.
What made it such a success? But of course, focusing on characters, which in this serie are completely different, “all of them with their own hidden ambitions and agendas”. There are a lot of them and they drastically change the atmosphere – for example, there’s that sociopath Ladd Russo, who’s killing people as it’s his ultimate pleasure, therefore whenever he’s on the scene, you feel anxious and the very next moment you see scene with the comedy duo – Isaac and Miria(They’re a link, between the characters), who I consider the funniest anime couple that there is. Therefore the atmosphere changes with the scenes, yet all the time you feel interested in the continuation of the plot.
Ladd Russo and his lovely team of ‘blood looks better on white’ guys.
Like I just said, characters are very important here, you easily decide who you like and who you dislike (For me – I <3 Miria and Isaac while I hate Jacuzzi Splot) and therefore like/dislike following their development more than others. Scenes are mixed-up and even though that for every episode there are few sub-plots, there’s always something important happening that’s connected to next episodes. Sometimes in one sub-plot you can see continuation of another character’s plot and then follow what happened before that, which makes it totally surprising and compelling. At the begininning it can seem to be quite random, but once you get further, you notice that it’s actually all part of one big plot, focused on survival, immortality with a pinch of comedy and bloodbath. Some scenes can be considered brutal, as there’s for instance a scene when a guy is being smashed to the ground on a running train(Quite interesting sound it makes!). Nevertheless, uncensored killing scenes make this show better on the ‘get-into-atmosphere’ part.
Isaac and Miria, they just radiate seriousness
Did something go wrong? Well, like I said – at the beginining you feel rather lost, it’s hard to follow and now that I think about it, I don’t really remember first episodes. It could be better ordered, with some kind of characters presentation so it wouldn’t take few episodes to understand what’s going on.(Atleast in my, ignorant case) Still, if you precisely focus on what happens, you should like it from the very beginning, if you don’t – Try following about 4-5 eps and you should get into it.
Typical mafia shooting scene.
In detail, plot is about mafia conflict(recruitment, shooting, shooting, shooting, killing, kidnapping, more shooting and stuff), a few-hundreds old grandpa trying to get his hands on immortality bottles with the help of his adorable Homunculus – Ennis(appearently, to become ever-living you just need to drink a tea), couple of easy-going thieves(Isaac&Miria) who steal random things in random places(Loved how they wanted to steal things from museum and instead ‘managed to make people incapable to enter it by stealing its entrance doors’), Flying Pussyfoot – a train on which the massacre hapens, with part of characters being abroad, having to face White Suits(Or being part of that sociopaths group – Ladd Russo), Black Suits(A group of terrorists including different from them Chane Laforet, dagger-wielding lady. They’re trying to use passangers as hostages) but also mysterious Rail Tracer, a killer who leaves it’s victims look like !#*%#$. There’s also Firo Prochainezo(Cool name bro), awesome at knife-fighting guy who’s staying with Martillo family, he’s damn cool and his fight sequence beats up all these damn shounens : Check it out. Of course, the mentioned characters meet each other and these plots merge, but that’s actually too complex for me to explain, so just watch it.
No censorship in my Baccano!… We can actually see this guy’s brain, wait why is that a good thing?
Summing up(I avoid all kind of spoilers here, for plot is essential), you won’t regret seeing this anime if you like ambitious, unique kind of series. It’s both stylish and unpredictable, thanks to the complex characters that there are. What about lineart? It surely fits the atmosphere, giving feeling of the past, it’s really nice too. Music? Awesome, couldn’t imagine better picks for opening, ending and overall OST. So animation and music surely blah blah blah blah blah atmosphere blah blah blah atmosphere atmosphere blah blah.(There’s a lot of ‘atmosphere’ in there, therefore it’s a good explanation.) I got to say, that I would never think that fantasy historical anime could be that good, and finally came across another serie that’s not only surprising, enjoyable but also as good at keeping atmosphere(damn, again!) as Ergo Proxy is.
You surely should see it, as it’s damn good. Just make sure you don’t watch it in English Dubbing, so if you download double-audio, switch to Japanese and turn on subtitles (Doable in Media Player Classic).
