Now that we’ve picked our favourite Autumn series, dropped all others and started running low on our Anime fuel, the winter season is right at the door ready to smack you with a snowball. Thankfully, all the fun-to-watch shows from autumn are still coming out and will accompany us through the winter. So even if the new series are horrible, we still have: Fate/ Zero, Persona 4, Mirai Nikki, Chihayafuru and Hunter x Hunter (2011), all that I also recommend you to try if you aren’t watching it already, as they’re not only worthy of the best of the season title, but also in retrospect to the whole year. Now let’s see take a look at the fresh titles that seem to have some potential:
Gundam SEED HD Remaster
Genres: Mecha, Action, Sci-fi, Military
Starts: Dec 21, 2011
Synopsis: C.E. 71: In the midst of war between the Naturals (OMNI) and Coordinators (ZAFT), a unit from ZAFT is dispatched to hijack the Earth Alliance’s newly developed mobile suits on the neutral colony of Heliopolis. Orb Civilian Coordinator Kira Yamato attends the technical college on Heliopolis. After ZAFT hijacks 4 of the 5 mobile suits, Kira stumbles upon the last one, Strike, forced to pilot it to save his and his friend’s lives. During this confusion, Kira also reunites with his childhood Coordinator friend, Athrun Zala, who ironically turns out to be a ZAFT soldier and one of the hijackers at Heliopolis. Having control of Strike, Kira joins the Earth Alliance boarding the ship known as Archangel, to protect his friends while despairing over becoming the enemy of his childhood friend and people.
I’m not a Gundam fan, I’ve watched Gundam Wing and Gundam 00, but I certainly didn’t fall in love with them. All these series always get unnecessarily complicated plot-wise but have lots of cool action scenes. I’ve decided to give it a shot for two reasons: One, is that it’s among the most respected Gundam series, and two.. It simply looks good in the PV. Definitely won’t be my ‘show of the season’ but has a fair chance of being enjoyable.
Busou Chuugakusei: Basket Army
Starts: Dec 22, 2011
Genres: Military, Action
Synopsis: The story is set in August of 2026 at the Fuji Training Facility. Natori Touko, a third-year middle school student in the Eastern Private Defense Academy, is entrenched in field training with instructor Kamiya. It has been a harsh training regiment, but it is finally the last day. Kamiya proposes a extracurricular class under the name Newest Weapons Research. But then, an incident occurs that rocks all of Japan.
There’s absolutely no reason not to try this serie, which trailer is longer than an episode (3 minutes), so I suppose it’s going to be very action packed. The ‘military and kids’ theme is getting old though, so hopefully it’ll bring something new to the genre.
Senhime Zesshou Symphogear
Starts: Dec 26. 2011
Genres: Action, Music, Supernatural
Synopsis: Humans have been menaced by mysterious monsters called “Designated Aberrant Disaster: Noise”. Tsubasa and Kanade are a popular vocal unit “Twei Wing”. They wear the new weapon “Symphogear” and fight against Noise to save the earth.
Huh? Music anime?.. This sounds quite interesting *looks up the plot* well, fuck. Let’s hope atleast the songs are good, the show itself is most likely going to be damn dumb though, not much trust here, but it’s something innovative so I’m intrigued to check it out.
Natsume Yuujinchou Shi
Starts: Jan 02, 2012
Genres: Slice of life, Drama, Supernatural
Synopsis: The fourth season of Natsume Yuujinchou.
A sequel to the third serie, Natsume Yuujinchou continues its rather stagnant story. I’m really surprised that this serie is getting dragged so long, it could’ve been wrapped up in three seasons, but instead they just keep coming and the plot barely moves at all, making it an awfully slow bedtime story. Nevertheless, its peacefulness and heartwarming nature make it somehow compelling, yet I can’t ignore the fact that the longer I watch it, the less motivated I am to keep going.
Recorder to Randoseru
Starts: Jan 06, 2012
Genres: School, Seinen
Synopsis: Miyagawa Atsushi is an 11-year-old boy who is 180 centimeters tall. Since he has a grown-up looking build but acts his age, he has always been running into troubles. On the other hand, his 17-year-old elder sister Atsumi is only 137 centimeters tall. Even though she has a childish looking build, Atsumi takes good care of Atsushi.
It’s quite a mindblow when you realise the guy on the picture is 11 years old and the girl is 17. It’s a seinen though, so it’s actually targetted at 18-30 yo audience. No idea what it’s going to be like, but definitely will give it a try.
Kill Me Baby
Starts: Jan 06, 2012
Genres: School, Comedy, Seinen
Synopsis: Kill Me Baby is a 4-panel style manga that follows the comedic life of a typical school girl Yasuna and her assassin classmate Sonya. Sonya’s attempt to fit in often fails when her natural assassin instincts kick in and Yasuna’s attempt to be more friendly with Sonya often gets her hurt or intimidated. Kill Me Baby’s cute sense of humor will keep you wanting more.
Another comedy?! Whoa, and all of them look completely different too. Kill Me Baby not only has a hillarious name, but its trailer looks like a standardish amv taken from nicovideo.. Which is quite damn weird. Well it’s a wild shot, but I have great hope in the assassins at school theme, might be quite a comedy goldmine.
Mouretsu Uchuu Kaizoku
(Bodacious Space Pirates)
Starts: Jan 08, 2012
Genres: Sci-fi, Space
Synopsis: The story centers around a spirited high school girl named Marika. She keeps herself busy with the space yacht club and her part-time job at a high-class retro café. One day, two men suddenly appear and claim to be subordinates of her dead father. They demand that she assume command of the space pirate ship Benten Maru. A privateer ship’s compact was made during a war of independence a century ago, and according to that compact, the ship must be inherited by the captain’s next direct descendant. Marika finds herself embarking on a new life as a space pirate.
This one looks hopelessly bad, and it took just the PV to reveal how lazy this serie looks. It’s like a CGI show in space with one typical high shcool heroine, and she isn’t even pretty. Well, I’m still willing to try the first episode, even though I see where this is going and if my animu-instinct tells me right, it will be one-episode-drop.
Starts: Jan 08, 2012
Genres: Action, Adventure, Historical, Seinen
Synopsis: The story reimagines the legendary adventures of the 10 brave warriors assembled by the warlord Sanada Yukimura in the year 1600, in the middle of Japan’s tumultuous Sengoku (Warring States) era.
As a fan of good action / fighting Anime, I’m really compelled to check this one out. Basing on trailer alone, it looks darn good. Now it’s just about characters, their development and plot. In worst case scenario, this will be a generic historical Anime that people watch because fights look cool.
Rinne no Lagrange
Starts: Jan 09, 2012
Genres: Comedy, Mecha
Synopsis: Kyono Madoka is a 17-year-old girl, who loves her home town Kamogawa and likes to help people in trouble. She rides a robot called Woks in her jersey wear and fights against aliens.
Even though the plot is completely random, considering the fact that it’s a pure comedy I think it’s good enough to try. It’s going to be split up in two 12-episode seasons and hopefully it will be good. I’m somehow optimistic and I think it will turn out to be just fine.
Starts: Jan 09, 2012
Genres: Mystery, Horror, School, Drama
Synopsis: 26 years ago, in a third-year classroom of a middle school, there was a student named Misaki. As an honors student who was also good at sports, the charming girl was popular with her classmates. When she suddenly died, her classmates decided to carry on as if she was still alive until graduation. Then, in the spring of 1998, a boy named Sakakibara Kouichi transfers to that classroom, and he grows suspicious of the fearful atmosphere in that classroom. In particular, there is a beautiful, aloof girl named Mei Misaki who wears an eyepatch and is always alone drawing pictures.
Looks like the new season’s thriller. I suppose it’s going to fight Mirai Nikki for the murdering queen character title. The plot doesn’t seem convincing, neither does the trailer, but it’s one of the few horror shows and the novel got very high scores, so I guess this might actually turn out to be good.
Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou
(web version, for the actual episode release check the date below)
Starts: Jan 09, 2012
Genres: Comedy, School, Shounen, Slice of Life
Synopsis: The original gag comedy manga follows the humorous yet “realistic” everyday life of Tadakuni, Hidenori, Yoshitake, and other students at a boys’ high school.
There are no words to explain how lame and cliche the title sounds (Daily Lives of High School Boys), yet, after checking a glipmse of the first episode –
One of the main characters has Gintoki’s voice! Oh dear god! This changes everything! I see some nice comedy potential in it. I didn’t want to watch it in the web-form though, I’ll just wait for the proper episodes to come out.
Ano Natsu de Matteru
Starts: Jan 10, 2012
Genres: Comedy, Romance
Synopsis: The October issue of Gakken’s Megami Magazine is announcing on Tuesday that Onegai Teacher/Onegai Twins story creator Yousuke Kuroda and Onegai franchise character designer Taraku Uon are collaborating on a new original anime called Ano Natsu de Matteru. The anime will be an adolescent romantic comedy.
The three main characters are the two girls Ichika Takatsuki and Remon Yamano, and the boy Kaito Kirishima.
Now that I think about it, we didn’t have a proper romance comedy for a while now, most of them being hopelessly bad, shoujos or even yaoi. Hopefully this one here will do better, but as I am not a fan of the genre, I’ll probably just tank my way through just to see the ending or drop it in the middle if the comedy won’t be any good and the show turns out slow-paced. Oh well, it’s one of these series that are either peaceful and convincing or boring but trying to save themselves with random love plot twists.
Papa no Iukoto wo Kikinasai!
Starts: Jan 11, 2012
Synopsis: Segawa Yuta is a freshman of a university. He lost his parents when he was small and was raised by his sister Yuri. Yuta has been living alone since Yuri got married to a middle aged man when Yuta was a junior high student.
One day, Yuri visited Yuta’s apartment and asked him to take care of her three daughters while Yuri and her husband were on a trip. He unwillingly accepted the job but the plane Yuri took went missing. In order to prevent the daughters from being adopted separately by relatives, Yuta decided to take in all three girls.
A life of a strange family in a tiny apartment begins. (The elder two of the daughters are stepchildren of Yuri’s husband. The smallest one is Yuri’s child.)
Aaaand yet another! This time we have a home-based comedy about a guy having to take care of three girls that aren’t even his. As long as they don’t focus on fanservice it might turn out quite damn well. But it’s still a big question mark without a proper trailer, so I suppose there’s no point in figuring it out now, let’s just wait for the first episode and everything will get clear.
Inu x Boku SS
Starts: Jan 13, 2012
Genres: Comedy, Mystery, Shounen, Supernatural
Synopsis: The Shirakiin house’s daughter, Shirakiin Riricho, who has a complex about being unable to live independently and unprotected, feels the need to move out and live on her own under the condition of residing in the mansion named “Ayakashi Kan.” In this mansion, only those who have cleared a very strict examination could reside in it, and for each resident, they are accompanied with one agent of the Secret Service (S.S.). Although Riricho has rejected the company of the S.S., while residing in the mansion she finds out that the agent dedicated to protecting her is actually the Fox Spirit whom she previously rescued.
We all can see where this is going.. A loli heroine, her bishounen guardian, supernatural setting with mystery in it. *Sigh* Why is this becoming so popular? It’s not like Dantalian no Shoka or Gosick got even popular. This time they atleast dropped the ‘detective and crime’ background, but the plot still sounds rather silly. Well, let’s hope the comedy will be decent, then who knows, it might turn out quite well.
Starts: Feb 3, 2012 (?)
Genres: School, Action, Drama, Slice of life
Synopsis: According to the official website, a TV anime of Black★Rock Shooter will be aired on the noitaminA programming block from January 2012.
Well, about fucking time. After the somehow-exciting OVA I was certainly disappointed in the fact that BRS is coming out in every possible form (figurines, games etc) and the TV serie is not released anytime soon. Now that it finally was announced, turns out it will be 8 episodes long, so I expect it to be a short journey with lots of fun-to-watch fights plus some drama topping. Definitely looking forward to it, even though it might turn out pretty but mediocre.
Other than that, we will see some of the previous series’ specials/OVAs from the BD discs, these include: Usagi Drop, Ikoku Meiro No Croisse, Steins;gate, Mirai Nikki and even Toradora. So that’s something to look forward to! Plus, we’ve got two interesting movies incoming: Berserk Ougon Jidaihen I(Feb 4, 2012), .hack//The Movie (Jan 21, 2012). Also don’t forget that the K-On! Movie came out a few weeks ago, so that’s something to try aswell.
Well that would be it, looks like this season we get lots of comedies and seinens! Sounds great to me, with current on-going Anime I fear nothing, bring it on, Japan!
(I already regret saying this)
